A car's AC knobs

Has your car’s AC started blowing only hot air? Has it stopped blowing any air at all? With the car AC not working, you’ll soon have a far warmer and less comfortable ride. Let’s take a look at the most common car AC problems, all of which a technician at your nearest Chrysler dealership can promptly repair.

Leaking Refrigerant

When your car’s AC is turned on, refrigerant circulates through the system, continually switching states between gas and liquid form. As it passes through the evaporator, the refrigerant draws heat away from the fins, chilling the air that’s blown into the cabin.

If the refrigerant starts to leak from any of the connection points or hoses it passes through, the AC will no longer be able to cool your car. These leaks can be tricky to locate because refrigerant is a thin, transparent, oily substance, but a technician can use a special dye to quickly find and seal the leak’s source.

Stuck Compressor Clutch

The AC compressor is the workhorse of a car’s air conditioner, compressing and pumping the refrigerant around the system. The compressor clutch connects the compressor to the engine’s power when you turn on the AC and disconnects it when you turn it off. If the clutch malfunctions, you may have trouble turning your air-con on, and occasionally, you may not be able to turn it off.

Cracked Cooling Fans

The cooling fans that bring the AC’s cold air into the cabin can sometimes become clogged up or cracked by debris flying in from outside. If this happens, you may receive less air blowing into the cabin, if any at all.

Faulty Condenser

The AC’s condenser turns the refrigerant back into a liquid state. Sometimes a condenser can become clogged by internal or external debris. The condenser’s seals and tubes can also sometimes wear out. And if any moisture makes its way into the condenser, it can freeze into ice crystals, which will also block the system.

Electrical Problems

A variety of electrical issues might bring a car’s air conditioner to a halt. Possible electrical issues include a blown fuse, failed switches, a faulty control module, frayed wiring, a loose connection, an electrical short, and more. It will usually require an experienced technician to diagnose and repair an electrical AC fault.

Moldy AC Interior

Sometimes mold or fungi can grow inside an AC system when it isn’t used for a long period of time. If this occurs, the AC will work well, but the air may carry an unpleasant mildewy smell. You’ll most likely need a technician to clean out the mold.
