A car's engine and battery being charged

These days, cars are filled with more electrical components than ever before. As such, the role of the car battery has never been more important. A technician at your local Chrysler dealership can examine your aging battery to let you know whether it’s time for a new car battery

The Connectors Are Corroded

Sometimes the metal connectors on the top of a car battery can become corroded. This corrosion usually has an ashy gray color. You may be able to clean mild corrosion, but if the connectors are too corroded, the battery won’t be able to deliver voltage properly and will need to be replaced.

The Battery Casing Is Misshapen

The battery is one of a car’s components that’s most sensitive to heat and cold. When exposed to extreme temperatures, the battery’s casing can sometimes start to warp out of shape and crack. This becomes more likely, the older a battery gets. If you see that your battery’s casing is in any way misshapen, you’ll probably need a new one.

The Battery Acid Is Leaking

When old or damaged, a battery’s casing can sometimes start to leak battery acid or gas. This emits a strong and awful sulfury smell that’s similar to rotten eggs. So if you ever smell rotten eggs in the cabin, check your battery for any sign of cracks or leaks.

The Engine Is Slow To Start

When a battery begins to wear down with age, it can no longer deliver electrical voltage as powerfully as before. This will often become clear when you’re trying to start your car. If you need to wait several seconds before the starter brings your engine to life, your battery may be on its last legs.

The Electronics Are Malfunctioning

The electronics throughout your car depend on the battery for power, especially when the engine’s turned off. A failing battery will struggle to supply enough voltage to keep the headlights, stereo, phone charger, air conditioning, and other electronic accessories on at full power.

The Check Engine Light Comes On

A failing battery affects so many parts of the car that it may trigger the check engine light to come on. Whenever the check engine light comes to life, you’ll usually need a technician to diagnose the underlying problem.

How Your Chrysler Dealer Tests Your Battery

When you have your car battery checked by a technician, they’ll usually use a multimeter to test the voltage when the battery is both partially and fully charged. Combined with a visual inspection, this is often all that’s required to know whether a car battery can still function properly or not.
