When it comes to your car’s performance, responsiveness, and safety, the tires are where the rubber meets the road. Without tires in top-notch condition, your entire driving experience suffers and you’re more at risk of sudden punctures, blowouts, and skids. If you notice the following signs of wear and tear, it’s probably time to visit your local Chrysler dealership for a set of new tires

Shallow Tread Depths

When the treads of your tires reach a certain shallowness, their ability to grip the road becomes dramatically reduced. The minimum safe tread depth is generally considered to be 2/32 of an inch. To be safe, you may want to replace your tires before they reach this level of wear, especially if you’re driving on wet or icy roads.

Most modern tires have tread wear indicator bars, which will help you know when the treads are becoming too shallow. These little bars are located in the voids between treads, running across the width of the tire. The bars are all but invisible when a tire is new, only appearing as the treads wear down.

Uneven Tire Wear

Tires tend to wear unevenly and over time, uneven tires can reduce handling and increase the risk of tire failure. This is why drivers are recommended to have their tires rotated at least twice a year. But if your tires have already worn down too unevenly to be fixed by rotation, you may need to have the full set of four replaced.

Spreading Sidewall Cracks

As durable as tire rubber is, exposure to sunlight, water, and extreme temperatures steadily dries out the rubber and causes cracks to appear in the sidewalls. This weakens the structural integrity of the tire, eventually making it unsafe to drive on. So if you notice a large number of cracks growing in the sidewalls of your tires, consider prompt replacements.

Bulging or Bubbling Rubber

An internally damaged tire may develop a bulge or bubble on the surface. This bulge is created by loosened rubber layering or air trying to escape. Whatever the cause, a bulge in the rubber means the tire is risky to drive on and needs to be replaced.

Falling Air Pressure

Sometimes an aging or damaged tire appears to be sturdy, but each time you measure air pressure, you notice the pressure is inexplicably falling. An experienced technician may be able to locate the source of the releasing air and repair it. But more often than not, the tire will need to go.
